I’ll be offline for about a week, returning on July 13th. No, I’m not going to Argentina or even hiking the Appalachian trail, but I am going off the grid to spend quality time with my wife and daughter. See you all soon!

Off to SIGMOD
June 29th, 2009 · No Comments · Noise
I hope you’ve been enjoying my recent posting frenzy, because the noise will be a bit think in the next couple of weeks. I’m about to head to Providence, where I’ll be attending SIGMOD 2009 and presenting an invited talk on “Design for Interaction“. Yes, database people care about HCIR too! I don’t know what [...]

Faceted Search Book Is In Print!
June 29th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Noise
To paraphrase Navin R. Johnson from The Jerk, the new faceted search books are here! I received my author’s copies this weekend, and I’ve heard from a few people that they’ve received theirs. It even features a blurb from Peter Morville that made me feel warm and fuzzy. So how do you get a copy? [...]

Attending Endeca Discover
June 9th, 2009 · No Comments · Noise
Apologies for the unusual hiatus in posting–I’ve been attending Endeca Discover (an annual user conference) and haven’t managed to allocate time for blogging. I’ll make up for it by blogging about the conference tomorrow, when I’m back to what passes for normality. In the mean time, feel free to follow the conference on Twitter.

I’m delighted to report that my faceted search book is now available for online purchase at the Morgan & Claypool site! The printed version should be going out shortly (you can pre-order at Barnes & Noble or Amazon); the publisher assures me that there will be copies in time for SIGIR.

I couldn’t think of a better way to start a holiday weekend than by uploading the revised chapters of my faceted search book to the publisher. It was the first–and hopefully last–time that I have hand-edited pdf files (download a trial version of Acrobat here if you’re jealous). Barring some unforeseen event, the publishers will [...]

Got Hate Tweets?
May 5th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Noise
I had the novel experience today of discovering that someone set up a Twitter account for the sole purpose of harassing me personally. I’m not sure what exactly I did to deserve this honor, but I’m amused by the personal attention, since I’m hardly a Twitter celebrity. Perhaps it’s someone I know, conducting a social [...]

If you’re attending the Infonortics Search Engine Meeting in Boston next week, please let me know! I’ll be there all day Monday and Tuesday, and I’ll be talking on Tuesday afternoon about “Enabling the Information Seeking Process”. I’m sticking around in Boston to attend the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers Spring Conference, [...]

Sorry About The Typos!
April 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Noise
I discovered belatedly that the Microsoft Word template my publisher had given me was suppressing spelling correction. My bad, I should have realized something was up as I was putting the draft together. In any case, if you are one of the people reviewing the manuscript, please return to the download page and grab the [...]

All Set On Reviewers!
April 19th, 2009 · No Comments · Noise
On Friday, shortly after sending a copy of my Faceted Search manuscript to my publisher, I put out a call for volunteer reviewers. The response has been overwhelming, and I am personally overwhelmed to see this validation that my online “friends” and “connections” truly live up to the meaning of those words, volunteering their offline [...]
