My name is Sylar! OK, I won't push my luck with Trekkie jokes...

Thanks for the kind words--I may not be a librarian, but I am a big fan of library science. And I do want to see the latest tools for supporting information seeking (some of which I'm helping to build!) become more affordable and thus ubiquitous for libraries. I am sure we'll get there--time commodifies all. But I suspect that is cold consolation for librarians with no patience and even less budget.

Dammit Jim, I'm a technologist, not a librarian!

I find that, as a cataloger (or "metadata specialist", in fancy language), I straddle both worlds. Thanks for Kelley's info. Great blog, by the way. I'm going to send it to all of my technology-forward librarian buddies.

Amy, I don't know--I'm a technologist, not a librarian. Perhaps Kelley can offer a more informed response--you can find her contact info here.

I like the idea of work-level records because they avoid the duplication of efforts and contain consistent, accurate information. But what entity is going to create and maintain these records? Will they be freely accessible, and will everyone be able to contribute to them? As LC moves further away from the authorities business, I worry that work-level records, which seem to be a huge part of the FRBR model, will fall to a subscription-based entity (like OCLC). Will this become yet another tool that smaller libraries cannot afford?
